While loosely following the rules of social distancing, my family has been spending every weekend in quarantine at our lake house with one or two other people we invite for a nice, wifi-free weekend away. Last weekend we invited by best friend Kyla and her mom to come for a rainy weekend of eating, drinking, and board games. My mom had just bought a new board game called "New Phone, Who Dis?"from the same creators as "What Do You Meme" if you've played that popular game. "New Phone, Who Dis?" follows the same rules as "Apples to Apples" (where a category card is played and everyone submits one of their cards as a response, and a judge picks the winner of the best response), except it's supposed to be like a texting conversation. The judge picks an "Inbox" card and each participant picks their best "Reply" card. To really set the stage for the game, each card is designed like an iMessage conversation on an iPhone, but the clock is set at 4:20 and the battery percentage is at 69%. At the lake house, we played this game every night for multiple hours, and we were all left in a fit of laughter by the end. In order to best portray this game to you, I'm going to write a few example rounds based on some of my favorite cards.
Example 1
Inbox: "Do you hate grapefruit or just feel neutral about them? Need quick answer."
Sample replies: "Sort of in the middle of a mental breakdown rn :/ I'll get back to you when the Xanax kicks in."
"Take me off your list of people to drunk text at 2am. I've been married for 3 years"
"It's seriously time for you to move out"
Example 2
Inbox: "Grandma is crab walking in her sleep again. It's your turn to wake her up."
Sample replies: "I was gonna say yes, but I remember you saying something about how you like to dip your Pop Tarts in ketchup and that's pretty messed up"
"I'm actually playing Call of Duty at the moment and this 10 year old is destroying my self esteem"
"My pug got neutered today. I kind of need to be here for him."
"I'd rather bob for apples in a clogged urinal"
Y'all get the picture. I still laugh when I think about some of the cards.
This burst of uncontrollable laughter was definitely needed after 2 weeks of shelter-in-place quarantine and trying to figure out online school, and I'm definitely trying to figure out ways to laugh everyday because of how much this helped my spirits.
This is what the game looks like if anyone needs a new board game to play - I'd highly recommend.

Sounds like a hilarious game. Hope you were still able to keep a bit of social distance.
ReplyDeleteI think I need to get this game ASAP. I desperately need sources of laughter during this crazy time in our lives. I found my self laughing out loud, alone in my room when reading the examples from your game. I enjoyed reading about your times at the lake house. I hope this game brings laughter for the rest of quarantine!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first opened this post, I thought it was going to be about you getting a new phone, but you proved me wrong! I think I need to invest in this game too. My family has tons of time on our hands, and laughing together would be a great way to spend it. Personally, I laughed even reading your example replies. What a cool game! I hope you continue to laugh as you social distance.
